Geographic information systems |
|
Geographic information systems, also known as Spatial Information Systems, are used to collect, analize and later present information that describes physical or logical features of real world entities.
Several different fields take advantage of this kind of systems, for example Geography, Criminology, Geology, Environmental analysis, Cartography, etc.
In all the preceeding fields it is very important to have the ability to geo-reference entities so that complex calculations can be performed (e.g. area or distance calculations, entities enclosed in a given area, and so on).
The variety of fields in which GIS can be applied, as well as the high level of specilization that professionals usually require, are factors that add complexity and threaten the correct execution of projects. |
